Some argue that CCTV cameras can reduce crime; after all that is the main aim behind installing cameras. However there are those who argue that CCTV cameras increase surveillance and reduce privacy, leading to a surveilled society.
According to a survey, as outlined in this article, a comparison of the number of cameras in each London borough with the proportion of crimes solved there found that police are no more likely to catch offenders in areas with hundreds of cameras than in those with hardly any.
Thus, the question is are CCTV cameras really effective? Is there a privacy issue? If not on cameras, on what should money be spent to reduce criminality? What other means could be used? These are all issues which I’m currently researching about. I have found this topic very interesting, and I’m glad I chose it to study it in more depth.
