I frequently post articles and links related to the environment. Here’s an initiative which I just heard about.
Twenty teams have been selected by the US Department of Energy and these teams, which are selected from colleges and universities worldwide, have competed in what is called the 2007 BP Solar Decathlon. This is a solar competition to design, build and operate the most attractive and energy-efficient solar-powered home. Using only energy from the sun, the teams should generate enough electricity to run a modern household. Basing their projects on energy efficiency, the chosen teams had to carefully choose the systems, products and appliances used in their houses and these solar houses have been transported to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. last October, where they have formed a solar village as part of the competition.
This was sponsored by BP, who is sponsoring this special event as part of their commitment to discovering cost effective, clean energy solutions for everyday living. They are one of the main corporate sponsors, and the only energy company sponsor of the 2007 Solar Decathlon, and have been involved since the first competition in 2002. In fact, BP sponsored the first Solar Decathlon in 2002 and the second in 2005.
Obviously these events were successful in creating greater awareness of solar energy’s potential and in advancing the science and technology of solar energy.
