This morning I was reading an article on Skynews about Bournville and a controversy with regards to Tesco selling alcohol in the area, where they were denied a licence to sell alcohol after a hearing at the Birmingham City Council today. So I decided to do some research to know more about the place and the reasons for this controversy.

Bournville is situated in Birmingham. This model village was founded in 1879 by George Cadbury and his brother for the employees at the chocolate factory.

In 1900, the Bournville Village Trust was set up to control the development of the estate, based on a set of guiding principles.

This creates a controversy - on one hand, people may want to move on and not be stuck to the past, whilst others want to keep the traditions. However, I think that after today’s denial to Tesco to sell alcohol, it is evident that the majority still have the past way of living at heart and don’t want to change.

This brings to mind some management and marketing principles I have learned in the past years. Perhaps Tesco should have done their research properly and consulted the residents before embarking on such plans.
