Carnival 2006

posted by kry in general, out and about

Early this morning I headed down to Valletta. Now, I must admit that I don’t usually like Carnival time although I feel really sorry for those people who work really hard all year long to prepare for these few days of fun and then the weather ruins everything.

However, after an absence of some years (around 7 years or more I think), today I went since my brothers were playing with their school band and I wanted to film them (another excuse to try out my new digital video camera) :)

However, unfortunately, half way through it started raining. All of a sudden, people were panicking. At that time I was trying to make my way out of Valletta to get the bus (I decided against going with my car and it was a good choice as parking would have been a nightmare), and we were stuck under the arcades, with people pushing (and people taking advantage of this situation and stealing mobilephones and handbags, as I later heard on the bus). Why can’t they organise things better? They should leave one side of the arcades for people to go into Valletta and the other side for people to get out. It would have been much better that way, and the hassle of people pushing and getting on top of each other would have been avoided.

Also, why do people have to try and open their umbrellas when they are not outside in the rain???? Whilst making my way out of Valletta, I saw people trying to open their umbrellas or already with their umbrellas open under the arcades with the risk of hurting someone with their umbrellas in people’s faces considering that at that time as I already said there was a rush of people pushing to get in/out of Valletta. Apparently common sense does not exist in a moment of panic!

Now the weather is much better and there is sunshine, so I do hope that it stays this way at least until Carnival time is over, for the sake of the people who like this time of year and especially for those who worked hard all year and spend large amounts of money to prepare for these few days of festivity.

Conclusion: I will probably avoid going to Valletta again at Carnival time !!
