Well today is a public holiday here in Malta - the feast of St. Peter & St.Paul, better known here as l-Imnarja.
Today is my day off so I’m not going to work..even if the shop is open since it is situated in Bugibba. We work on a roster basis and this week I have Wednesday and Thursday off. Having to open a shop and work on a public holiday and on Saturday evenings till late at night and also on Sundays is not something you usually look forward to. Personally I always saw the weekend as a time to relax and do the things I enjoy doing, for which I do not have time during the week due to other commitments. But with certain jobs you can’t do otherwise. Then again, with my current situation it is better to work than stay indoors.
I am happy with my current job as I enjoy meeting people. You can never imagine how different and diverse people can be until you work in an environment where you meet people from all spheres of life..especially as the shop is situated in Bugibba which is a touristic area. Many people come from year to year and remember you! They come to the shop just to say hi and catch up with the news that happened throughout the year. You come to appreciate simple things..such as a Thank You from your customers especially when you do your best to try and help them. This week I had a Maltese customer in, and her comment made me realise that even a smile or a few words to your customer can make a difference, even if you don’t notice. Some people come in to chat as they feel lonely or are going through difficult times and your words can make their day.
I must say that even if this job is temporary, the skills I am gaining will surely help me in my life and in my future career..whatever that will be. The satisfaction you get when you see a happy customer and when you receive positive feedback is enough to help you look forward to your next day at work…
